Basic Facts About Full Color Printing
A full-color printing is the reproduction of an image or text in color instead of the simple black and white or black and white print.
While there are many techniques for reproducing color images, graphics and processes for industrial equipment used for the mass reproduction of color images on paper. In this sense, includes full color printing reproduction techniques suited for printing machines capable of thousands or millions of impressions for publishing newspapers and magazines, brochures, cards, posters and similar mass market items.
In this type of industrial or commercial printing, the technique used to print full color images as color photographs, is known as four-color printing process, because four inks are used: three primary colors and black. The colors of the subtractive primary inks are cyan, bright blue, magenta, a vivid red-purple and yellow, which is abbreviated as CMYK.
Two graphic techniques are needed to prepare images for printing in four colors. In the run up to the press, original images are translated into forms that can be used in a printing press, through the color separation and screening or halftoning. These measures make it possible the creation of printing plates that can transfer the color prints of paper in printing presses based on principles of lithography.
The color separation process begins by separating the original artwork into its component red, green and blue (for example, a digital scanner). Before Image Digital has developed, the traditional method of doing this was to photograph the image three times, using a filter for each color. Thus the desired result is three grayscale images that represent red, green and blue (RGB) components of the original image.
The next step is to reverse each of these separations. When a negative image of the red component is produced, the resulting image represents the cyan component of the image. Also, there are negative for green and blue components producing color separations magenta and yellow, respectively. This is done because cyan, magenta and yellow are subtractive primaries which each represent two of the three primary colors additive (RGB) after one additive primary has been subtracted from white light.
Today's digital printing methods do not have the restriction of a single CMYK color space to traditional processes. Many presses can print from files that were ripped with images using either RGB or CMYK modes. The color reproduction capability of a particular color space can vary, the process of obtaining accurate colors within a color model is called color matching.
Currently, there is also an emerging method of full color printing or process correctly known as six-color printing, which adds orange and green to traditional CMYK inks for a larger color gamut and more vibrant. Unfortunately, these alternate color systems still rely on the separation color, halftone and lithography to produce printed images.
Color printing can also involve only one color ink, or multiple color inks that are not primary colors. Using a limited number of color inks, or specific color inks, in addition to the primary colors, is known as point Color printing. In general, patches of color inks are specific formulations that are designed to print only, instead of mixing with other ink on the paper to produce various hues and shades.
The range of land available color inks, such as paint, is virtually limitless, and far more diverse than colors that can be produced by four-color printing process. Spot colors subtle color ranges from light to strong fluorescent reflective metal.
A full-color printing involves a series of steps, or transformations that can generate a color reproduction quality of any printed material needed.
